Rethinking Gender Fluidity and Expression in the Realms of the Unreal

“In conjunction with the exhibition, Betwixt-and-Between: Henry Darger’s Vivian Girls, guest curator, Leisa Rundquist explores aspects of gender conformity and transgression in the Realms of the Unreal.  Juxtaposing the artist’s favored images of little girls from pop culture and his transformation of these representations into nude children with intersex characteristics, Rundquist locates ways in which girlhood is constructed, resisted, and even transcended in Darger’s art.”

“…Betwixt and Between’s curatorial nudge in the direction of letting Darger be Darger, inquisitively but not so judgmentally, appears to be a gesture that just might open up some new doors to understanding this seemingly unknowable artist’s enigmatic art — because of, not despite, its confoundingly ambiguous mix of emotions, psychological tension, storybook symbolism, and peculiar charms.”

“In Darger’s tale, the army of small, sweet children are also strong. More curious, though, is their ability to embody a “spectrum of gender, as opposed to just one,” as Darger scholar and curator of “Betwixt and Between” Leisa Rundquist explains. Upon close study of the artist’s work, Rundquist discovered that this fluidity is portrayed as an empowering force for the children.”
